McCann keen to accelerate development of goalkeepers

Development will be the order of the day for goalkeepers Louis Jones and Ben Bottomley after signing new contracts with Rovers.

That is the verdict of manager Grant McCann after both Academy graduates opted to extend their stays at the club.

And he is looking to ensure both emerge stronger and more confident from pre-season.

On Jones, McCann believes the 24-year-old has matured plenty both on and off the pitch since he last worked with him during his previous spell.

“I spoke to Louis and I think he’s grown up,” the Rovers boss said. “He’s definitely improved, which is credit to the goalkeeping coaches that he’s had.

“We’re looking forward to the development of him and seeing if we can push him on. He’s a big lad and he can handle himself.

“We just want to get that confidence without arrogance out of him, where he’s got a steel about him. We’re hoping we can do that with him.”

McCann admitted he is looking to accelerate the development of Bottomley over the coming months.

The 20-year-old has yet to make his senior debut for the club and McCann will examine the potential for sending him out on loan to gain first team experience.

He said: “You see too many times with these young goalkeepers that they’re released too early and find themselves scratching around. We need to give him an opportunity here.

“We’ll see where we are towards the end of pre-season and whether we can get him some games. Initially we want to keep him in and around Lawsy and Louis.

“You want to go out and play men’s football and sample it. Louis has sampled that over the last three or four years here and he’s one that will be wanting to play more games but understands he’ll have a fight on his hands.

“We’ll see how Ben goes in pre-season, and we’ll look to see if we can pitch him somewhere he can get minutes.”
