Grant McCann is excited to hand Zain Westbrooke an opportunity to get back to his best with Rovers.
The midfielder endured a tough period with previous club Bristol Rovers and opted to become a free agent in January before being handed a short term deal at the Eco-Power Stadium in March.
One of McCann’s first decisions on becoming Rovers manager last month was to hand the 26-year-old a new one-year contract.
And McCann is confident Westbrooke can rediscover the form of his earlier career.
“He’s a lad that just needs a chance,” McCann said. “He’s had it rough for the last seven or eight months and we’re willing to give him that chance.
“Back when he was at Coventry, I was impressed by him. He went to Bristol Rovers and did well but, for whatever reason, it didn’t work out for him in the end.
“He’s got the determination to get back to it. You don’t become a bad player overnight. It’s been frustrating for him with what happened and there’s reasons and things around that.
“He’s come in here at the back end of the season and he’s done fine in games. We feel there is more from him and we can get him back to those good performances that he was showing at Coventry and Bristol Rovers.
“We’re looking forward to seeing him do that.”
