Schofield: not ruthless enough

26 March 2023

Danny Schofield felt his side weren’t ruthless enough in either penalty area after losing 2-0 at home to Northampton Town.

The Cobblers took advantage of two mistakes from Rovers at the Eco-Power Stadium with a goal in each half from Mitch Pinnock and Sam Hoskins.

On errors:

“It’s a difficult one to take, losing games is never easy but especially in the manner we did with two mistakes is particularly disappointing.

“We’ve got to look at the goals and chances we concede and reduce those as much as possible, with any goals there is always something you could have done to stop it.

“I thought there was some positive play at 1-0 down, especially early in the second-half we were in the ascendancy and created a couple of opportunities.

“Having said that we didn’t test their goalkeeper enough, we’re aware that we’re low on numbers in that area so we have to keep working on it.”

On pulling together:

“Everybody needs to improve, we are where we are in the table for a reason and it doesn’t lie, but the way we rectify that is by continuing to work and trust the work we’re doing.

“I can understand the fans’ frustrations, and I have to be strong enough to take that criticism but also focus the players on the next game.

“We play the way we do isn’t just because it’s a style of play, it’s to win games and I believe once we get it right we’ll do that.

“We’ve got to keep fighting for every point between now and the end of the season, the next game is always the most important so our focus is to give everything in every single game.”
