Schofield insists Rovers head to Salford with confidence, not pressure

16 March 2023

Danny Schofield insists his Rovers squad head to Salford City with no pressure on their shoulders despite the need for positive results to keep alive the push for a top seven finish.

Hosts Salford are one of the sides Rovers are looking to chase down, sitting six points head in seventh spot having played a game more.

While admitting that time is of the essence in the race for the play-offs, Schofield says his players will head to the Peninsula Stadium with confidence rather than pressure.

Schofield on realistic chances of making the top seven:

“I think it’s always there. Is it in touching distance? I’m not sure - six points off with a game in hand over some other clubs. We can see it. It’s definitely not something that is out of possibility and it is definitely something that we’re aiming for.

“It probably needs to happen now. We’ve got 11 games left and every game is just as important as the other. Salford are next and they’re above us. I think we’ve only got two or three teams to play that are above us.

“We need to put our full focus into this game and we go there to compete and win the game. We’ve prepared really well in order to give ourselves the chance of doing that. Whichever team is picked, we’re going to have to give it our all to beat a very good Salford team.”

On the test of Salford:

“It’s a trend pretty much throughout the league - the search for consistency - and it’s something we’re all striving for as coaches. I think they’re a very good team with some excellent players. They’ve got a very good coach who has been nurtured through the Manchester United Academy.

“We understand what they’re about and how they’re very well coached in and out of possession. We’ve tried to highlight a few strengths to nullify and weaknesses we can expose. We’re expecting a tough game but also a tactical game.”

On approaching the game:

“We’ve got to focus on it as just another game.

“We’re looking to really reduce the distance between us and those play-off positions. We know how important it is but the players will go into it with full confidence and no pressure - just to try to go and perform.”
