Sports science intern Faye Stockwell earning valuable experience with Rovers

8 March 2023

As part of International Women’s Day, Rovers’ sports science intern Faye Stockwell has been explaining how working at the club has helped her with her studies over the past few months.

Since arriving at Rovers last summer, Faye has been combining her sport and exercise sciences degree at the University of Leeds, with gaining valuable experience at Cantley Park and the majority of Rovers matchdays.

She said: “My university offers a year in industry so I was looking for a club to come in and work for. I contacted Sam Bowring (head of sports science) through LinkedIn and he invited me in for a chat.

“We spoke about what I was looking to get from the role, and what he could offer me. I decided this was the right club to come to and get involved, so from pre-season onwards I’ve been here.

“I’ve done two years at university before coming into here so it was just about applying my knowledge and getting the experience while being thrown in at the deep end.

“Using the skills I’ve learned in a real-life setting has been good for me, and enabled me to come out of my comfort zone on several occasions.”

As a woman working in the men’s game, Faye is keen to encourage others striving towards a career in football to follow their dreams.

She added: “It can definitely be a bit intimidating when you first arrive, being one of only a few women working in a largely male-dominated environment.

“Once I got to know everybody and gained the respect of the staff and players, it made it much easier for me to settle and get on with things.

“My message to people aspiring to get into the industry is to understand that while it may be tough to begin with, once you get used to it you have to show what you’re about and get involved.”
