Rovers U18s extended their unbeaten run to four matches after being held to a goalless draw by Grimsby Town in the EFL Youth Alliance League.

It was a game of few chances at the Hoober Homes Elite Performance Centre with the battle in midfield playing the key role throughout the fixture.

The result left Rovers four points off the Championship Merit League placings.

The Mariners applied the early pressure in the opening few minutes but Rovers defence stood firm and saw off the early barrage.

The hosts soon found their feet though and enjoyed some success down the left wing but tricky conditions saw a golden opportunity evade them.

Grimsby let a glorious chance of their own slip by moments after when their striker met a lofted ball at close range but could only drag wide his shot on the turn.

Rovers best chance of the period then came on the half hour mark.

Sam Straughan-Brown powered forward and released Harry Wood on the left wing but as he cut inside to shoot, the keeper blocked and the ball was eventually cleared off the line by the defence.

Rovers had a string of set-pieces late in the second half that saw them pepper the Mariners’ back line but the interval arrived without score.

Rovers continued to push in the second half and went close to opening the scoring shortly after the restart.

Wood cut inside from the right but a defender blocked his shot, with Justin Bennett smashing the loose ball at goal but his effort went high and wide.

The game became an end-to-end affair once more but efforts on goal proved hard to come by.

Charlie Thompson featured as a Rovers scholar for the first time as he replaced Max Adamson for the final 20 minutes.

Both sides pushed for the winner in the closing stages without success.

Rovers U18s will now look to build on their recent run of form as they welcome table toppers Burton Albion to the Hoober Homes Elite Performance Centre on Saturday, December 2 (11am).
