Rovers grabbed a seventh home win from nine matches at the Eco-Power Stadium as they triumphed 3-1 against Colchester United.
A James Maxwell effort along with strikes from on-form pair Mo Faal and Joe Ironside saw Rovers through to a deserved win after enjoying the better of the attacking play.
It had not been the most coherent performance from Rovers, who found themselves pegged back before the break by Joe Taylor’s strike for the visitors.
But they showed ruthlessness when it counted after the break to secure the win.
Grant McCann made two changes from the side that started at Crewe Alexandra four days earlier with Tommy Rowe and captain Richard Wood returning to the XI.
Rovers made a strong start to the game with Mo Faal heading narrowly over the bar following a surging run and cross from Tom Nixon.
Faal went close again moments later as he sent an audacious overhead kick just wide from a corner.
The visitors were largely restricted to opportunities on the break as Rovers dominated possession. Taylor stabbed a shot wide after a mazy run forward.
Jack Senior drew a save from Tom Smith with a free kick from the corner of the box while the Colchester keeper tipped a low drive from James Maxwell wide after a brilliant team move.
Rovers took the lead on 33 minutes. Senior whipped in a corner that Smith fumbled with the ball ricocheting in off Maxwell.
Taylor beat the offside trap only to be denied by Louis Jones as Colchester pushed.
And the visitors did level on 43 minutes when Taylor raced onto a brilliant ball forward from Chay Cooper and fired low past Louis Jones.
Smith reacted well to push away a cross from deep from Nixon that threatened to creep straight in.
And deep into first half stoppage time, Jones produced an excellent double stop to deny both Taylor and Arthur Read.
Chances were hard to come by in the early stages of a second half where play was bogged down in midfield for long periods.
Wood was inches away from connecting with the ball at the back post after a creative free kick routine from Rovers.
And the Rovers skipper drew a save from Smith with a header as the hour marked approached.
Owen Bailey looped a header over the bar from a Maxwell cross before Rovers went back in front on 73 minutes.
Substitute Luke Molyneux delivered an excellent cross which Faal met and planted a header in the bottom corner.
Ironside was close to extending the advantage moments later when he sent a header narrowly over the bar.
Jones produced an excellent save to bat away a piledriver from Colchester skipper Noah Chilvers while Arthur Read saw a shot deflect wide as the visitors pushed for the equaliser.
Molyneux drew a fine save from Smith after cutting in from the right before dancing his way into the box and winning a penalty when bundled over by Will Greenidge.
Ironside stepped up and smashed his spotkick home off the underside of the crossbar to extend Rovers’ advantage on 87 minutes.
Jones denied substitute Bradley Ihionvien with his legs after he broke clear in added time.
