McCann targeting good run in FA Cup

3 November 2023

Grant McCann insists a good run in the Emirates FA Cup is high on his agenda as Rovers prepare to begin their campaign in the competition against Accrington Stanley.

Rovers will host Accrington at the Eco-Power Stadium and McCann has pledged to name as strong a team as possible in the quest to progress to the second round.

“We’ll be as strong as we possibly can,” McCann said. “There were a few knocks and niggles from the last game that we’ve been assessing throughout the week to see if they can go again for us.

“We want to be as strong as we can. We’d like to have a good run in the FA Cup. It’s something for the football club that is important and it’s important for us so we’ll see how we go.

“We know it’s against an in-form Accrington team and a good team that John [Coleman] has put together. They’ll be disappointed they came down last season and they’ll be looking to go straight back up.

“But this is a cup game and we know we’re up against a good Accrington team and we’ll have to be at our best.”

After a run of seven wins from the last 11 matches in all competitions, McCann is keen for Rovers to maintain the good form as they step away from league action for a week.

And he acknowledges the impact a good run can have on fortunes over the season.

“It’s a case of us feeling like we’re in good form and we want to build momentum, whatever the competition is,” he said.

“It just so happens that on Saturday it’s the FA Cup, it’s one of the most prestigious ones we can enter. For us as a club it can help on a lot of different aspects. We’re approaching January and the further we get in the competition can help the club financially. Hopefully it can help me for when we get to then.

“We’re no different at Doncaster Rovers and I’m sure Accrington are thinking the same thing. We want to be strong, be competitive in the game and get through to the next round but we know it’ll be tough.”

Visitors Accrington have been on a strong run of form of their own - winning five of their last six matches to move into the play-off places in Sky Bet League Two.

“They’re a good team,” McCann said. “John [Coleman] has recruited well and he’s kept a lot of the players he had in League One last season. They’ve got a lot of threats at the top end of the pitch, they’ve got good energy and they’re really good on transitions.

“There’s a lot of elements this week we’ve had to work on to try to stop that and hopefully on the flip side we can hurt them at the other end.

“It’s got the makings of a good cup game. I think it’s two teams who are quite similar in style of play. We want to play, break forward quick and try to create a lot of opportunities and chances so I think it will be a good game.”
