Lawlor: We need to translate training ground progress to matchday success

15 September 2023

It has been a positive week on the training ground for Rovers but Ian Lawlor knows full well that amounts to little if the result this weekend is not a positive one.

Rovers head to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday having seen a focus on mentality at Cantley Park from manager Grant McCann.

Lawlor said the sessions have been really positive and the task is to translate that into a first league win of the season this weekend.

“It comes from your daily work,” he said. “We’re putting in good training sessions every day where everyone is at it, everyone is involved and buying into what we’re doing.

“As long as we can keep doing that, taking on the manager’s messages and hopefully put that into a game on Saturday.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time. We know what our jobs are and what is expected of us.

“For me, I don’t think we listen to any outside noise and we just have to firmly believe in what we’re doing every single day.”

Lawlor has been one of Rovers’ top performers so far this season but insists there is plenty more improvement to come.

He said: “I feel I’ve developed quite a bit but I’m no finished article. I want to keep getting better every single day and that’s what we’re doing with the goalkeeping department that we have.

“I’m just keeping my head down and keeping improving as much as I can. Hopefully I can show that on a Saturday and help the team as much as possible.”
