McCann: We're in a good headspace to attack Gillingham test

22 September 2023

Grant McCann believes Rovers will have to be at their very best to see off the challenge of early Sky Bet League Two pacesetters Gillingham.

The table-toppers visit the Eco-Power Stadium on Saturday, looking to continue their impressive start, while Rovers are out to build on last weekend’s first league triumph of the campaign.

And manager McCann says the squad are in a great headspace for the test of the weekend.

“Gillingham are strong,” he said. “They’ve recruited really well. They’ve got a real clear plan and an identity about the way they want to play.

“Knowing Neil Harris’ teams over the years and having played against them, you can see their principles and what they’re all about.

“They’re always hard to play against and hard to break down. We’re going to have to be at our very best to win the game but the boys are in a very good headspace to attack this game and see where we go.”

Gillingham have won five of their opening eight league matches 1-0 and have conceded just six goals in those games.

McCann says there is a determination for Rovers to take the initiative in the game as they look to secure a first home league win.

“We’re going to have to be strong, resolute and we’re going to have to make sure we take the game to them because we’re at home, we want to start well and see if we can finish well too,” he said.

“I think it’s got the makings of a really good game and Neil will know we’re no easy touch.

“I’m hoping we can show him that on Saturday.

“We know Gillingham are strong. They’ve got good individuals but they’re a good team as well. There’s a lot of teams in this division with good individuals but sometimes struggle to bring it together as a team. Gillingham are definitely not that.

“You can see they’re a real team with real togetherness.”

McCann revealed that Ian Lawlor, Jack Senior and Kyle Hurst have a chance of being passed fit to be involved in the game.
