Goal demonstrated our confidence: Maxwell

14 April 2024

James Maxwell said his goal in the win over Accrington Stanley was a reflection of the confidence currently flowing in the Rovers camp.

The left back netted his first goal of the season in the comfortable 4-0 triumph as Rovers extended their winning run to eight consecutive matches.

It was a composed finish from Maxwell, who continued his run into the box from left back and met a pass from Zain Westbrooke.

“I remember driving inside, which is a common theme with myself and is something I do a lot,” he said. “I passed it to Bails and I actually screamed for the one-two so I’m glad he didn’t give it to me.

“I just kept going. I had one on Tuesday which was a wee bit different with me driving myself but this one was a lot better finish.

“I suppose you could take that kind of goal as us playing with a little bit of freedom. Myself from left back running through the middle of the pitch with Zain and Bails almost in the ten.

“I think the team is playing with a freedom and confidence that happens when you’re on the kind of run we’re on.

“But internally it’s just about ticking off games and not putting too much pressure on ourselves.

“We expect to win, as we have done all season, and we’ve gone into every game to win, but now it’s coming for us.”

On the win, Maxwell felt Rovers were in command throughout.

“It was a controlled performance from us and we never felt in too much danger throughout the game,” he said.

“We spoke about before the game that Accrington could play with freedom because they don’t have too much to play for. It can be dangerous task but I think we dealt with that very well because they’ve still got some very good players.”
