McCann straight onto next game despite equalling record run

25 April 2024

Rovers may have equalled the club record for successive wins but Grant McCann steadfastly remained focused on the next game after seeing off Colchester United.

McCann has refused to be budged from a mentality that has helped carry Rovers to ten straight victories for only the second time in the club’s history and craft a run of just one defeat in the last 17 matches.

While Rovers have climbed to fifth in Sky Bet League Two, McCann would not entertain talk of the record-equalling run, nor play-off aspirations, as he spoke to the media after the come-from-behind 4-1 triumph at the JobServe Community Stadium.

“We’ll just go to Gillingham and approach it how we have every game since the turn of the year,” he said. “It’ll be tough because they’re a team that are really experienced and they’re strong at home, where they’ve picked up some really good wins.

“It’ll be a tough game. We’ll enjoy tonight but we’ll get back to the drawing board on Wednesday and come up with a plan for Gillingham.”

The regular season in the division comes to an end on Saturday, with Rovers visiting the Priestfield Stadium.

Though the prospect of creating more club history is a real one, McCann says nothing has surprised him from his team throughout the incredible run which began at the start of February.

“We’re just enjoying ourselves,” he said. “The boys are playing with a lot of confidence and even at 1-0 down I knew there was enough in the group to come back.

“Saturday was a similar sort of feeling. They’ve done it again - coming back from behind and scoring four goals.

“We’re in good form. The boys are playing with a lot of freedom and expression so long may that continue.”
