McCann proud of team effort in Wrexham win

3 April 2024

Grant McCann hailed a strong all-round team performance as Rovers made it five consecutive wins when beating Wrexham.

Owen Bailey headed home just before the break to send Rovers on their way to victory over the automatic promotion chasers.

Rovers were largely in control for much of the game before standing up to a late onslaught from the visitors.

“I thought we were good as a team defensively,” McCann said. “You know they’re always going to have a bit of spell and that came when they were really pushing in the last ten or 15 minutes.

“They kept getting bigger and bigger with the subs that were coming in and balls were coming from 30 or 40 yards in our box.

“We just got off the press a little bit and that is something we’ll look at.

“We wanted to be aggressive against them and I think you saw that over the first 75 minutes until after that when we just stepped off it and didn’t get to the ball enough.

“We had to defend and when Timmy needed to, he made a fantastic save to tip the ball around the post from Steven Fletcher.

“Apart from that, I thought for 75 minutes we were very, very good.”

McCann spoke of his pride at the manner in which Rovers dealt with the challenge and continued their excellent run of form.

“Immensely proud,” he said. “I felt it was another good performance from us. We knew Wrexham are very good on transition so we had to be good on the ball. They sit in that mid block and when they win it back they break quickly.

“It was a really good performance from us and I’m really proud of the boys.

“We scored a really good goal worthy of winning any game. A tremendous cross from James Maxwell and an excellent header from Owen Bailey who got up above Will Boyle who’s probably their best header of the ball was superb.”
