Rovers roar let Molyneux know clever free kick paid off at Morecambe

It was not until the roar went up from the away end that Luke Molyneux knew his carefully prepared free kick against Morecambe had found the back of the net.

Molyneux scored twice in the 3-0 triumph at the Mazuma Stadium with his second goal coming direct from a set piece designed to befuddle the opposition.

Coming from the playbook of goalkeeping coach Kyle Letheren, the 25 yard free kick was lined up to ensure Morecambe did not expect Molyneux would be the player to strike the ball.

And he caught the hosts out and he curled the ball around the wall and found the bottom corner.

“I actually didn’t see it go in,” Molyneux said. “I couldn’t see it because of the wall so I had to listen for the cheers.

“I knew I could get it around the wall but it was just a question of whether it went in or not.

“We’ve worked on that a bit on the training ground to make it look like Haks was going to take it and then me come over at the last minute and just put it down the side of the wall.

“It worked.”

Speaking to the media after the game, Molyneux was asked about his burgeoning relationship with Hakeeb Adelakun, who has been in similarly excellent form since joining Rovers on loan in January.

He said: “I feel like we clicked quite quick. We’ve played a lot of games together in a short space of time and the front three has been similar for those.

“We’ve got a good connection and I feel like I know what he likes to do when he comes inside and I think he is the same with me.

“I feel like we’re contributing well to the team at the minute.

“We mix it up a lot to keep defenders on their toes. They might think they’re going to be up against Haks for the full game or me on my side but it’s good to switch it up.”
