REPORT | Grimsby Town 1 Rovers 5

17 February 2024

Rovers roared to another memorable win at Blundell Park as they swept aside Grimsby Town 5-1.

Goals from Luke Molyneux, Joe Ironside, Matthew Craig and Kyle Hurst plus an own goal saw Rovers through to the win and a fourth straight game without defeat for Grant McCann’s men.

Rovers made a blistering start to the game with Molyneux and Ironside netting inside the opening eight minutes before a strong response from the hosts who pulled a goal back through a Danny Rose penalty.

There was no looking back in the second half, with Rovers slapping a stranglehold on proceedings and further extending the advantage in a thoroughly professional showing.

McCann made two changes from the side that started at Salford four days earlier as James Maxwell and Harrison Biggins came into the XI.

Rovers took the lead on six minutes with a superb team move and even better finish. Starting with goalkeeper Thimothée Lo-Tutala, the ball was moved up the pitch with one touch play until Hakeeb Adelakun found Molyneux in the middle to rifle in from 20 yards.

Inside just two minutes, the lead had been extended. Adelakun robbed the ball in the middle of the park and surged forward before sliding a pass into Ironside who found the corner with a first time strike.

The hosts looked shellshocked but recovered well and were soon on the front foot.

And they were gifted a way back into the game when Charles Vernam tumbled under challenge from Molyneux, allowing Rose to strike home from the spot with 19 minutes gone.

Grimsby pushed on in search of the equaliser, with Rovers becoming increasingly scrappy in possession.

Rose sent an acrobatic effort wide from the centre of the box while Kieran Green was denied by Thimothée Lo-Tutala before Harry Clifton fired off target with the follow-up.

Biggins pulled a shot wide from distance while Rose drew a save from Lo-Tutala late in the half.

Rovers were close to reopening a two goal lead on the stroke of half time when Owen Bailey curled a brilliant effort onto the woodwork from the edge of the box.

But it took just six minutes of the second half for them to extend the advantage. Molyneux found Jamie Sterry on the overlap with the full back drilling the ball into the middle where Maher bundled into his own net.

Lo-Tutala made a brave save at the feet of Maher before Vernam drew a solid save from the Hull City loanee.

Rovers made sure of the victory on 72 minutes. From a free kick, Tom Anderson got the ball under control and laid off to Craig who picked his spot in the far corner from 15 yards.

The icing was put on the cake on 82 minutes. Hurst found space on the left, cut inside and curled a low shot into the far corner.

Rovers saw out the win in complete comfort to send the 1,158 strong travelling support home happy.

Rovers: Lo-Tutala, Sterry, Anderson, Wood, Maxwell, Craig (Rowe 74), Bailey (Broadbent 74), Molyneux (Hurst 65), Biggins (Waters 65), Adelakun (Nixon 83), Ironside. Subs not used: Jones, Olowu.
