Everyone hungry to face Grimsby: McCann

16 February 2024

Grant McCann says everyone in the Rovers camp is looking forward to potentially being involved in Saturday's derby game at Grimsby Town.

Following the 2-2 draw at Salford City in midweek - a third game without defeat for the first time this season - manager McCann says the mood among the group has been buoyant, with the prospect of featuring in front of a sold-out away support a tantalising one for the players.

“It’s been really good to see the players the last couple of days with smiles on their faces, looking forward to the game,” McCann told the media.

“It’s a big game, a derby and we know we’re bringing a big support with us.

“We want to make everybody happy and send them home happy after the game.

“That's what we’ve been gearing up to do ever since we got on the bus at Salford and headed home. Straight away it was about preparing for the next one and that’s what we’ve done.

“Hopefully we can put a plan in place, go there on the front foot and see if we can give our fans a happy Saturday.”

McCann is pleased with the manner in which the January signings have settled into the group but says the moulding of the group is a continuous process that will run through to the end of the season.

“I think the recruitment has been good, particularly the January arrivals, but also the lads that we brought in during the summer,” he said.

“You see the goals Joe Ironside has scored, how well Owen Bailey has done, Jamie Sterry when he’s been in the team has been very good, Jack Senior. The list goes on.

“The boys that we’ve brought in have been good and the lads that came in last month have added to that, for sure.

“Matty Craig, Haks, Tim and we were obviously disappointed to lose Conor. There’s been a lot to like about the signings we’ve been brought in.

“What’s important is to try to keep it together, mould it and put a team on the pitch that can produce what we want of them. And what we want from them is more results, more wins and then starting to gradually move up the table, but game by game.”
