We were never going to sit back at Grimsby: Molyneux

18 February 2024

Luke Molyneux says there was always a determination from Rovers to rack up the goals at Grimsby Town.

Rovers netted a third six minutes into the second half to put daylight between themselves and the hosts after a competitive first half.

But Molyneux says there was no intention of sitting on the lead, with Rovers going on to win 5-1 at Blundell Park.

“We said at half time it was more about getting the next goal and kicking on from there,” he said.

“It wasn’t about seeing the game out, it was about pushing on to get four or five. We’ve done that and it came from the team talk at half time.

“You want to get off to a good start and we got the two early goals. It felt like we had the momentum and every time we won the ball back it felt like we were going to score.

“It was disappointing with the penalty but we held on well and just had to see it through to half time and in the second half we just came out firing again.”

Molyneux feels Rovers have shaken off a few mental shackles with their positive run of form and the benefits of that were shown in emphatic fashion at Grimsby.

Rovers thumped their hosts 5-1 with Molyneux opening the scoring at the end of an excellent team move.

And the forward says the run of four matches unbeaten has brought a sense of freedom into the group.

“From the last few results, it’s helped that,” he said. “For now, it’s taken the pressure off and it’s all about looking up. We can play with a lot more freedom and the only was is up at the moment.

“Everyone on the pitch, including the lads that came off the bench, were amazing and I feel like we’ve been like that for the last few weeks.

“We’ve had some good results and we probably should have beaten Salford on Tuesday but this was just a top performance from everyone.”
