Rovers sign Tottenham midfielder Matthew Craig on loan

9 January 2024

Rovers are delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder Matthew Craig on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 20-year-old will spend the rest of the season at the Eco-Power Stadium and is eligible to be part of the squad for Saturday’s clash with Newport County.

“I’m delighted to get this done,” Craig said. “I’m really happy to be here.

“The history and the size of the club is incredible. The manager, his philosophy how he wants to play, I think it really aligns with what I try to do as well. I’m just overjoyed to be here.”

Barnet-born Craig has been on Spurs’ books since U12 level and signed his first professional contract with the Premier League club in 2021. Also able to play at centre back or full back, he signed a new long-term deal last summer, following his senior debut.

The Scotland U21 international has trained with the first team at Tottenham for the past few years and came off the bench in the 4-1 win over Leeds United on the final day of the 2022/23 season. He has been an unused substitute on multiple occasions, including in the Europa Conference League.

Rovers manager Grant McCann said: “He’s a very good player. We’ve been tracking Matthew since the summer window shut with numerous games watched and reports done on him.

“He comes here with good pedigree and he’s ready for the challenge.

“He’s going to be a very good player and to get him in this early in the window is great.”

Matthew will wear shirt number 37 during his time with Rovers.
