McCann impressed with Rovers debutants

15 January 2024

Grant McCann was delighted with the performances of his three debutants in Rovers’ clash with Newport County.

McCann handed debuts to new arrivals Jay McGrath, Billy Waters and Matthew Craig against the Exiles.

“Matty Craig is a sensational midfield player,” McCann said. “That’’s his first start and I thought he was excellent.

“He takes the ball, handles it, can run forward.

“We want to add goals to his game and I think that’s something we can help him with by getting him into positions to score.

“He’s predominantly been used as a number six at Tottenham but we moved him into the eight.

“Jay McGrath - it was a first class debut, in terms of what he had to do.

“You can see that he’s aggressive, calm on the ball. He’s got a lovely diagonal ball in him, he competes. He set one of the chances up in the first half by dropping the ball down in the middle of the goal.

“He’s a young lad who has got lots of development in him. Left-footed centre halves are hard to come by and we’ve got one here who can develop and grow with us.

“With Billy, that’s his first start in probably four or five months. It was always in the back of my mind to give him 60 to 70 minutes.

“But you can see when he gets sharper, he;’s going to be a real livewire for us.”

McCann revealed both Craig and Waters are ineligible to feature in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy tie against Wigan, having played in early rounds for their parent clubs.
