REPORT | Rovers 2 Forest Green Rovers 0

23 March 2024

Rovers secured a third consecutive league win for the first time this season as they saw off Forest Green Rovers at the Eco-Power Stadium.

A Luke Molyneux strike and a Richard Keogh own goal helped Rovers to a deserved triumph after thoroughly dominating attacking play on the afternoon.

While they struggled to transfer the control into clear cut opportunities, Rovers struck when it counted to make it four home wins on the trot and six victories from nine matches.

Grant McCann made three changes from the side that started the win at Swindon Town with Joe Ironside, Matthew Craig and James Maxwell returning from injury.

Rovers produced some good passing play in the early stages but struggled to break down the stubborn opposition.

Molyneux had the first sight of goal when cutting in from the right, but his low drive to the near post was batted away awkwardly by Forest Green keeper Vicente Reyes.

Hakeeb Adelakun lashed a low shot from 35 yards that Reyes was more than equal to as Rovers continued to pin the visitors back into their own half and dominated possession.

Rovers should have been ahead midway through the half. James Maxwell stabbed a cross to the back post where Owen Bailey rose but failed to hit the target with his header.

Joe Ironside powered a header straight at Reyes from a Jamie Sterry cross while Molyneux fired wide after a good breakaway late in the half.

Forest Green had more of a say in possession early in the second half but Rovers soon wrestled their way back on top.

And they finally broke the deadlock just after the hour mark. A cross from Sterry was stabbed away by Keogh only for Molyneux to pounce and pick his spot from ten yards.

Adelakun showed brilliant skill on half way to take himself clear and reach the edge of the box before squaring to Ironside, who saw his low shot saved by Reyes.

Rovers were largely comfortable in their lead, even as more attacking options were introduced for Forest Green with a wayward strike by Christian Doidge the best of the visitors’ offering.

And they found daylight between themselves on the opposition on 86 minutes. Molyneux drilled a low ball across the box which deflected in off the outstretched leg of Keogh.

It allowed Rovers to see out the remaining minutes in even greater comfort.

Rovers: Lo-Tutala, Sterry, Anderson, Wood, Maxwell, Bailey (Westbrooke 87), Craig (Broadbent 87), Molyneux, Biggins (Rowe 63), Adelakun (Hurst 87), Ironside (Biamou 73). Subs not used: Jones, Olowu.
