McCann welcomes Westbrooke return

3 March 2024

Grant McCann welcomed the return of Zain Westbrooke to the Rovers squad for the trip to Walsall.

The midfielder made his first appearance in a matchday squad since November following a thigh injury that had initially threatened his season.

And, speaking after the 3-1 defeat at Walsall, manager McCann said he felt Westbrooke would be an important player for Rovers for the remainder of the campaign.

“Zain is a big, big player for us,” he said. “Even for this one, he’s only trained a week with us and it was probably a little bit early for us.

“But because of Luke Molyneux’s injury, we decided to involve him. You can just see his calmness, how he sucks players in, draws them and plays through them.

“He’s a very good player and it’s nice to see him back.”

On the injury to Molyneux, McCann said there is not too much to be concerned about.

He said: “It was a tight glute for Luke. He tried. He had a fitness test on Friday and just didn’t quite come through it.

“Hopefully with another day or two, he should be okay for the Bradford game on Tuesday.”
