Wood urges Rovers to build on positives from Walsall loss

3 March 2024

Richard Wood insists there is no reason for Rovers’ positive momentum to stall despite suffering defeat at Walsall.

Rovers had an unbeaten run of five matches prior to falling to the loss at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Captain Wood felt Rovers performed well on the afternoon and were unfortunate to lose, with plenty of positives to be carried forward - starting with the trip to Bradford City in midweek.

“It’s disappointing that the unbeaten run has come to an end,” he said. “But we’ve got to take the positives from it. I thought we controlled the majority of the game.

“Conceding three goals obviously isn’t very good but we’ll debrief it on Monday and go again for Tuesday night.

“We need to take the positives and build on it. Not worry too much about this one and move on to the next game.”

Wood said the mindset of the group has been excellent in recent weeks and feels that will stand them in good stead as they seek to put the defeat behind them.

“That’s why I think we’re in a good place,” he said. “I know we’ve lost and nobody likes losing but we’ve just got to be positive.

“That’s how we have been over the last few games. We can’t worry too much about this and move on to the next.

“We need to keep progressing that and keep the momentum going. The gaffer has been brilliant with encouraging us, not being afraid of anything and just being confident going into games.

“It’s nice to see everyone performing well. We’ve not got the result today but we just need to keep going.

“The consistent messages just need to keep coming through.”
