McCann targets top for Rovers in aftermath of play-off disappointment

11 May 2024

The message from Grant McCann was emphatic in the face of bitter play-off disappointment for Rovers - we are targeting the top next season.

McCann cut a devastated figure as he met with the media in the aftermath of the penalty shootout defeat in the second leg of the Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-final against Crewe Alexandra.

But he was bullish when talk turned to what is to come next for Rovers and revealed he had delivered a strong message to his players in the changing room after the game.

“This club shouldn’t be in League Two,” McCann said. “You see that tonight with 13,000 fans here.

“Ultimately we haven’t done the job. It’s really hurtful for me.

“I said to the players after that we will be going to win the league next season. There’s no question about that.

“And I said if there’s anyone who doesn’t think we can, tell your agent to call me and find a new club. There’s no way I’m waiting for my team to get going for another three or four months like I did at the start of this season.

“Some of the players have got a decision to make because if they’re not ready to come back and win the league they don’t need to come back.

“A lot of players have signed new contracts and we’re in negotiations with two or three of them. Now this is done we’ll put deadlines on decisions and if they haven’t agreed, we’ll have to look at other options because we can’t wait forever.

“At this moment in time I’m not thinking about that, just how much we have let everyone down.”
