The gaffer has got the best out of me: Molyneux

Luke Molyneux feels that manager Grant McCann has brought the best out of him over the past year and insists there is more to come as the pair plot a promotion push with Rovers in the new season.

Molyneux signed a new three-year contract with Rovers and immediately targeted a successful promotion push after agonising disappointment in the play-offs last term.

And he is looking forward to continuing his relationship with McCann and assistant Cliff Byrne, who he is convinced have the club on the right track.

“I know how the gaffer wants to play now,” the 26-year-old said. “He’s brought the best out of me and I just want to take that into next season.

“He’s just been great with me and all the lads. He’s perfect for me with the way I want to play and he’s just given me the confidence to go and express myself.

“He gives us the freedom to go out there and do what we want. He wants us to play and express ourselves. He’s not going to shout as us for giving the ball away. He’s going to let us go and do our thing.

“That’s what I want as a player. I want to express myself knowing that I’m not going to get shouted at.”

While disappointed with how the play-off campaign played out, Molyneux believes Rovers can take plenty of confidence from their performance over the last few months and head into the new season with real positive momentum.

“It’s all about what-ifs and if you did this or didn’t do that,” he said. “It’s still raw but it gives you that motivation to take it into next season.

“Even though we didn’t get promoted, I still see it as a success. It’s a step in the right direction.

“We struggled the season before with everything that was going on. It wasn’t a very stable atmosphere.

“But since the gaffer and Cliff have come in, it’s a lot more stable and it just feels like we’re all moving in the right direction.

“I was enjoying my football and it was coming with goals and assists. Hopefully that will continue going into next season.”
