Coppinger Closing In On 300!

8 January 2013

An appearance against Stevenage away on Saturday will see club legend James Coppinger join the list of Rovers players with 300 or more league appearances.

The former Darlington trainee left the club on a loan basis after 8 years with the club, on 297 appearances but after a less than productive loan move to Nottingham Forest his return has provided a chance to renew his long standing relationship with the fans.

Making two substitute appearances since his December return, Copps has continued his climb up the Rovers top 10 player appearances list, joining names from the past such as Fred Emery and Colin Douglas on the all time list.

Coppinger, who joined the club originally in 2004, is 13 appearances short of 365 total appearances in all competitions which would put him 6th on the all time list, further cementing his status as a Doncaster Rovers cult hero.

Copps return to action against fellow League One pace setters Sheffield United last week has been a welcome boost for the club coming out of the busy Christmas schedule.

As the only survivor along with Neil Sullivan from the Rovers playoff final winning team in 2008, the side which propelled the club to its highest league status since 1958, Copps return to the squad has been greeted as a good omen for the side sat in the automatic promotion places going into the New Year.

Coppinger will be part of another Rovers record on Saturday as the club closes in on 12 away league games unbeaten. Rovers away form has been a large part of their success this season with the record starting with a 2-1 win at Colchester on the 15th September.

Glyn Snodin, Len Graham and Ken Hardwick who are in the top 10 for appearances will be within reach by the end of the season as the midfielder continues his return to the first team.

The 31 year old is eager to restart his Donny career now back in the fold and return the club to its former glories. The club will hopefully be able to celebrate a remarkable achievement of 300 games on Saturday at Stevenage.

The top 10 list for league appearances is:
Fred Emery  -  417
Colin Douglas  - 404
Bert Tindall  - 402
Brian Makepeace  -  353
Syd Bycroft  - 333
Dennis Peacock  - 329
Len Graham  - 312
Glyn Snodin - 309
Ken Hardwick – 308
James Coppinger - 299
