'Stern' McCann hails Rovers for incredible comeback against Barrow

21 April 2024

Grant McCann was delighted that stern words at half time were taken in the right spirit by his players as Rovers delivered a remarkable comeback against Barrow.

The Rovers boss admitted being particularly critical of his side at the break as they found themselves two goals down to the play-off chasers.

But he refused to take any credit for what followed, as a Joe Ironside brace and efforts from Hakeeb Adelakun and Harrison Biggins saw Rovers roar back for a ninth consecutive win.

"It could have gone either way because I wasn't nice with them at half time," McCann said. “I was a little bit firm with them and it's probably the first time I've had to do that in 16 games so it could easily have gone another way.

"It's testament to what we've got in the changing room and the character, desire and commitment to just push and push.

"Once we got the penalty, I had a feeling inside me that we could win the game. The subs that came on and the change of shape certainly helped us. We felt keeping Molly and Hursty high, high up the pitch and Hakeeb just floating around Joe would give us more initiative and it certainly did.

"It's nothing to do with my team talk - it's what the boys delivered on the pitch. It's as simple as that.

“They had to go and put what we said onto the pitch. To come back like we did - we were in total control and I don’t think we gave them a sniff at all in the second half.”

McCann said the manner of the win was among the best of his career - and certainly the pinnacle of the winning streak to date.

“It’s right up there,” he said. “I said to the boys at half time that of all the wins we’ve had, this would be the best one if we could come back.

“In the first half we weren’t good enough. We actually played into what they wanted us to do. We didn’t move the ball quick enough and we didn’t commit.

“The big message this week was to commit people because of their shape. They set up with an extra midfield player in a 4-5-1 and it’s very difficult to break down. It’s how Barrow play and it’s how they’ve been successful. If you’re loose on it they can punish you.”
