McCann's praise for supporters on Colchester trip

24 April 2024

Grant McCann lauded the travelling Rovers support for backing them to a 4-1 win over Colchester United which equalled the club record for successive wins at ten matches.

Almost 600 fans made the long trip to the JobServe Community Stadium and witnessed Rovers roar back from a goal down with strikes from Luke Molyneux, Harrison Biggins, Tom Anderson and Joe Ironside.

McCann was unable to join in celebrations at the end of the game as he served a touchline ban but wished to place on record his thanks to the supporters who made the trip.

“The fans were outstanding,” he said. “I’m just gutted that I couldn’t go and celebrate with them. I asked the referee but I didn’t want to get myself into any more trouble

“ We appreciate them. It’s a long way down here - I know that because I’ve been here twice in the last week. I can’t thank them enough.

“I could hear them all game and they kept the boys going. It’s a cold Tuesday night and a three and a half hour trip from Doncaster. We’re really appreciative of them and glad we could send them home happy.”

McCann spoke of his pride in the performance, which saw Rovers shake off the disappointment of conceding early to win comfortably on the night.

“I’m really proud. Conceding early wasn’t ideal for us but the response was outstanding.

“We always play for more goals. We’re never content to sit and take what we’ve got. It’s the way we like to manage and go about things.

“We were up against a team at the bottom end of the table who needed a point to stay up. We knew it was going to be a tough because Danny and Nicky [Cowley] have managed across the leagues and know what they’re all about. In the first half it was a bit tough but in the second half I felt a lot more comfortable. They did’n’t have many opportunities on our goal and defensively we were very strong.

“I thought we were a bit slow getting back into our shape after we’d gone forward. We didn’t switch on to them going a bit more direct than they have been and we dallied a bit. But we stopped that which helped up and got us a couple more goals.”
