Manager Paul Dickov has praised his players belief and attitude following the club's win at Watford.
A confident performance from Doncaster Rovers saw them defeat Championship side Watford at Vicarage Road, giving Rovers their fourth away win in a row this season.“I thought we were outstanding. We’ve come up against a very good team who are flying high at the minute. Looking at some of the stats they only had one shot on target all game, so defensively that shows how good we were, especially when we played with such a young back four.
“I thought going forward we were fantastic. We broke well and kept the ball brilliantly and really put pressure on them. I’m delighted for the boys.
“We knew tonight was going to be difficult. They play good football and credit has to go to our players because Watford had to change their system three or four times to try and break us down.
“We started the game very well. In the first 25 minutes we were outstanding, but then we started to complicate things. At half time we just told the boys to calm things down, do the basics right and keep it simple- and in the second half they did an excellent job of that.
“A lot of credit has to go to the players because they had the belief to not just go out there and play but also be brave both on and off the ball, especially defensively."
19 year old Liam Wakefield was the hero of the night for Rovers as he scored the winning goal to send Rovers through to the next round.
“Wakey (Liam Wakefield) was fantastic and deserved his goal, as was Cedric (Evina) at left back and the two centre halves. I thought they dealt with two top Championship strikers very well.
“When you come to places like this you have to have a good team shape about you and you have to defend well to provide the base for playing attacking football and I thought we did that today. I’ve given a lot of credit to the defence but I also thought both our wide men were outstanding too."
Nathan Tyson, who recently revelaed that he had fallen out of love with football before joining Rovers, put the visitors ahead on 12 minutes and worked tirelessly to ensure Rovers saw out the game and advance to the next round. Dickov was quick to credit the striker.
“Nathan (Tyson) has been a different class since he’s come to us," Dickov said.
"His attitude is up there with the best and he really leads by example, which is something we need in this team. He deserved his goal.
“The togetherness that we’ve got within the group is up there with the best that I’ve seen and I think if you’ve got that in a squad you always have a chance of doing well on the pitch.
“It’s hard to pick individuals out tonight because they were all outstanding against a good Championship club.
“It’s important not to get carried away, myself included, but the most pleasing thing is to see the players actively doing what we’ve asked them to do, and the results are coming. As a manager you can’t ask for more than that.”
