Owls to Provide Competitive Test

26 July 2014

Doncaster Rovers v Sheffield Wednesday - Sunday, 3pm.

Rovers manager Paul Dickov said that he was relishing the opportunity to take on local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, even if it is only in a pre-season friendly.

Rovers defeated the Owls twice in the 2013/14 Sky Bet Championship season and will face many a local team next season.

“It will be a big game with a decent crowd and it’s another game looking forward to the start of the season,” said Dickov.

“We spoke to the players after the Grimsby game and results aren’t really important, it’s more about fitness levels.

“If you can get results and play well within that then its good. It will be a tough test for us and with two weeks to go we’ll be looking to start shaping the team towards the Yeovil game.”

Dickov, who sees the fixture against the Owls as ideal preparation, said he was “hopeful” of making additions to his squad, which will play in twelve local derbies next term (against sides within 50 miles of Doncaster).

“Hopefully we’ll have a couple in for Sunday, if not then there’ll be some others in my mind for the start of the season and it’s a great opportunity for them (youngsters).

“Maybe this time last week they might not have been in my thinking and it’s a challenge for them. Not many clubs will give their kids a chance,” he said.
