Danny Amos, Rian McLean and Myron Gibbons fired Rovers’ U23 side to within touching distance of the Premier League Cup knockout stages.

Gary McSheffrey’s side sit second in Group D with a six point lead over Aston Villa, whom head to the Keepmoat Stadium next Wednesday evening knowing only a victory would keep their hopes of staying in the competition alive.

Amos fired Rovers ahead with a left-footed shot from just inside the area, with McLean doubling the visitors’ advantage 10 minutes later with an almost identical effort but with his right foot.

Gibbons ensured it was 3-0 at the interval as he converted a penalty with half an hour gone to cap an opening 45 minutes that the home side just edged in terms of possession but saw Rovers create far more chances.

Rovers were clearly full of confidence and a trialist made it 4-0 after 54 minutes to effectively seal the points.

The home side did get goals back after 64 and 76 minutes, but Rovers held firm to stay second in the group and firmly in control of their own progression - needing just one point from their final two home games.

Rovers host Aston Villa - winners of the competition in 2017/18 - on Wednesday January 29 (7pm KO) as they search for a place in the last 16 of the competition. Entrance is free for Silver Members, with adults £3 and those 17 and under gaining entry for £1. Tickets are available now at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
